Kristin: Lauren Isn't Trashy Enough For MTV

On both MTV's Laguna Beach and The Hills, Kristin Cavallari was portrayed as Lauren Conrad's arch nemesis. But, to speak to Cavallari today, she would say very little that was portrayed on The Hills resembled her actual life.

"Yeah, in high school," Cavallari tells Zap2it when we asked her about her supposed rivalry with Conrad.

"We're very friendly with each other," she says. "The last time we saw each other was The Hills wrap party. We hung out all night. We're very friendly. I don't have her phone number. I don't call her. But when we see each other, we're very nice."

Cavallari, who will be guest starring on Wednesday's (Feb. 16) episode of The Middle on ABC, says that she was surprised to hear that MTV canceled Conrad's reality show before it even aired. But, while she expressed that she didn't expect that Conrad's show would be killed by the network, she says she can understand why.

"To be honest I think that 'Jersey Shore' is so freakin' hot," she says. "The ratings are unbelievable. And I think that, unfortunately, TV is getting trashier and trashier. Lauren's very sweet and very nice. That's not always that very entertaining."

Lauren Doesn't Need a Special Day For Love

Lauren Conrad's boyfriend Kyle Howard is in the clear for Valentine's Day.

The former Hills star says she doesn't need a present and doesn't really need to do anything special for the romantic holiday, either.

"I'm so not a romantic," she told PEOPLE Saturday at her belated 25th birthday party at Vegas's Pure Nightclub. "For me it's all about the little things that people do."

For the record, Conrad and her boyfriend have no plans for the big day. In his defense, Howard is "very sweet," she said in gold, shimmering Farrakhan dress. "I don't think you need a specific day to celebrate your love for someone. I think it can be a Tuesday. It's an everyday thing."

Though not one for romantic gifts, Conrad is a big believer in sentimental or practical presents. Her favorite birthday gift earlier this month was a photo album given to her by a friend, she said. Howard went the practical route, giving her an iPad case. "It was something I needed and it was great."

Though a recent internet report claimed the duo is secretly engaged, a ring-less Conrad denied the rumor but said things are going "great" between the two of them. She even joked that she's going to start capitalizing on the rumors.

"I think that's the fourth time that's happened," she said. "I'm gonna start a registry."

MTV Cans New Lauren Conrad Realtiy Show

Last fall, MTV announced that it was reuniting with Lauren Conrad, star of the network’s Laguna Beach and The Hills, for another reality series focused on the young star’s burgeoning fashion line. But EW has EXCLUSIVELY learned why the Conrad series has been passed on by the network. “We decided not to go ahead with the show,” says David Janollari, EVP, Head of Programming for MTV. “She did do a pilot. There were talks about whether we could somehow manage to put together a special based on that footage but that’s also a big question mark based on her interest in that and the finances. We love her! We would love her on our network!” The proposed series was not a glossy reality soap like The Hills but much more documentary style. It was also noticeably absent from MTV’s Upfront this week. Says Janollari, “It was a great attempt but it just didn’t feel like a perfect fit for us now.” (The news of Conrad’s show not moving forward was first reported by blogger Rob Owen.)

UPDATE Lauren Conrad has sent EW a statement regarding MTV’s decision:

“We sold a show to MTV, filmed it and are really proud of the final result. MTV felt the subject matter was too high brow for their audience and offered me the opportunity to change the show by incorporating more of my personal life. We agreed going into the project that this show would be an aspirational one, focusing on my career and my goals and not my personal relationships. We delivered the show that we sold and are sorry MTV didn’t feel their viewers were savvy enough to appreciate it.”

Lauren Conrad Approached By "DWTS"

After Audrina Patridge did so well on Dancing With The Stars, rumors have now surfaced that her former MTV co-star, Lauren Conrad, may be shimmying her way into ABC's competitive ballroom.

Conrad admitted to Kidd Kraddick in The Morning that she was approached to perform on the dance show. But, The Hills alum said, "I have no rhythm and I'm an awful dancer."

When asked if her nightclub antics would have helped her prepare for the dance competition, Conrad joked, "That's different dancing though -- Nobody's Tangoing in the club."

Lauren Conrad & Kyle Howard Are Not Engaged

Looks like Lauren Conrad isn't joining the bridal brigade after all.

Though the The New York Post's Page Six reported that the 24-year-old MTV reality star is engaged to actor Kyle Howard, a rep for Conrad says there's no truth to the rumor.

"I will tell you exactly what I told The Post," her rep tells Us Magazine. "This is totally false."

Dating since 2008, Conrad has kept her relationship with the My Boys actor, 32, away from MTV's cameras -- which was one of the many reasons she walked away from The Hills in 2009.

"By the time I had met Kyle, I had already perfected my 'double life,'" she explained to Seventeen last year. "There was my TV life and my real life."

Lauren Conrad's Young Hollywood Interview

Lauren Conrad conducted an interview with Young Hollywood Studios earlier this month talking about fashion, books, hair, and her new reality show.

Lauren starts out complimenting British self-serving interviewer Oliver Trevena about his fashion and hair, then talks about her upcoming reality show and her new line.

Lauren admits she confides in stylist for advice on her styles and elaborates how she learns from mistakes in the past, and her slow transition from blonde to brunette.

Lauren doesn't worry about losing her bombshell status explaining how she changes her hair every two months, while her friends don't get too worked up about stepping up their style when out with Lauren.

Lauren also hopes she can show her upcoming collection at New York Fashion Week after doing LA Fashion Week two times before, but doing a fashion week must be done sparingly before it becomes work, and not a passion.

So far, Lauren is happy to be where's she at right now in her life working in fashion, and would not change a thing about her life.

Lo Gets Book Advice From Lauren Conrad

Lo Bosworth is bringing out her inner Carrie Bradshaw for her new book. In "The Lo-Down," out now, the former "Hills" star doles out advice about dating, and she admits that her opinions in the book aren't much different from the ones she shared on the small screen.

"For me, on the show, I always found myself giving advice to my girlfriends and mostly advice about the men in all of our lives," she told MTV News. "So writing a book about relationships was a natural next step for me. Writing the book and writing about my experience has been almost cathartic in a way, and it really feels like when you wake up with your girlfriends after a great night out and you talk about the night before and about all these guys. It's really conversational. There's good tips. It's a fun read."

Bosworth took all her past boy experience and channeled it into the book, but it was one particular relationship that left her with her best piece of advice. "I wrote the book coming off a pretty bad breakup, and I realized the most important relationship lesson I've learned so far is first, you have to believe in who you really are ... and you can't compromise who that person is. That's what the book is really about," she explained. "Get out there and live your life! Do something for yourself!"

While cameras are no longer catching her words of wisdom, Bosworth said some of her "Hills" pals have checked out the book. "Lauren [Conrad] has read it and Stephanie [Pratt] has peeked through it," she said. "And they're really excited!"

Conrad, of course, has several books of her own on the market, and Bosworth took her friend's advice when it came to promoting the book.

"[Lauren] gave me a lot of advice — not necessarily about writing the book, but we have talked a lot about going on a book tour, and I was really anxious to go on a book tour," she said, adding that she was afraid the book might not be successful. "She said to me, 'You really almost have to have an alter ego. You have to be excited. You have to walk in the room confidently with a smile on your face and you can't show how nervous you are. ... What you put out there, it comes back.' [My alter ego is] just really happy and excited, because I get nervous a lot. I'm a little more shy than meets the eye."

Lauren Conrad: I'm Afraid Of Fashion Failure

Lauren Conrad admits that she is always afraid of failure and there's been many, many times where she questions herself about the clothing line she's putting out.

Lauren has a right to be because of bad publicity her first Lauren Conrad Collection received for bad designs and overpricing.

Lauren attributes this to the fact that she did not always have control over the collection because someone else was financing it.

Lauren learned real quick that if you're not the boss, you always have to meet in the middle.

The end result was New York Times called her first collection sub-Old Navy.

So now, Lauren Conrad has invested a large amount of her own capital just to have full creative control and ensure that her new collection is of higher quality and success.

With this, Lauren is designing very chic, clean pieces that have good fit and good fabrics sold at upscale boutiques ranging from $90 to $390.

Lauren hopes Paper Crown will see revenue in about a year after its' release.

Lauren Conrad Departs From LAX Airport

Gearing up to re-enter the spotlight ahead of her new reality show's debut, Lauren Conrad was spotted readying for an outbound flight from LAX Airport in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 9).

Still rocking her darker hairdo, the former "Hills" hottie passed through the metro airport's security checkpoint before trekking through the terminal and onto an awaiting aircraft set for departure.

Aside from her television efforts, Miss Conrad is also making final preparations for the release of her upcoming Paper Crown collection due to launch this Fall.

And while she's made it clear that she'd rather focus on fashion and writing than TV, her agent Max Stubblefield explained that the show is necessary to help keep her buyer base intact and growing.

Of the decision to return to MTV, Stubblefield said, "Lauren's new businesses will feed on the show—which will feed on the new businesses"

Lauren Conrad Has Gone To The Dark Side

Dressed in a light beige Quail design and nude booties, Lauren Conrad showed off a brand new brunette hair color at Wednesday's CoverGirl 50th birthday party in West Hollywood.

It's a surprising move for Conrad, 24, who told Us Magazine in 2008, "There is something so sexy about having long blonde hair."

However, according to the star's hair pro, Kristin Ess, Conrad has been talking about trying a darker hue for a long time. "It was just time to go for it," says Ess. "We've done so many variations of blonde in the past and it's fun to do something new."

Ess and Conrad looked through red carpet photos for inspiration and loved Mila Kunis and Jessica Biel's "Brazilian brown" shade.

To get the desired effect, Ess first painted on a warm brown base, followed by bursts of highlights around the face and at the ends, topped off with a golden gloss to add shine.

In addition to changing her hair color, the former Hills star turned clothing designer and bestselling author is back to her (other) roots: filming a new reality show with MTV.
