'The Hills' Was 'Not Scripted,' Kelly Cutrone Says

Was it real or fake? That's the question many fans seem to be considering since credits rolled on "The Hills" for the last time on Tuesday night. The show's creator, Adam DiVello, revealed on Thursday (July 15) that the final moment between Brody and Kristin was staged. But a onetime castmember of the hit reality series, PR maven Kelly Cutrone — now on MTV's "The City" — insists that everything else on the show is for real.

"Well, not really, because the show's not scripted," Cutrone told MTV News when asked whether fans should now re-think the show given the finale episode. "It's just not. I've been on the show, it's not scripted. I think it's a whole piss-take on everybody going, 'Is the show scripted? Is it not scripted?' "

Plus, Cutrone said, it was the best possible way to end a show that is, in fact, a reality show.

"I mean the show's got to end somehow, and if the show's based in reality, how do you end something that's real? I mean, what do you do? So the whole [thing] was a flip," she concluded. "I thought it was funny that it ended with Brody!"

The City Creator: Major Changes For Season 3

On the eve of The Hills' series finale, series creator and executive producer Adam DiVello is looking ahead to a new season of his other show, The City.

Led by Hills alum Whitney Port, the series wrapped its second season Tuesday with Port and BFF Roxy Olin still on the outs after a disagreement at work. Port was contemplating signing with one of her mentor's rival PR companies. Although the New York-based series has yet to be officially renewed for a third season, DiVello already has big changes in the works.

"We're kind of tooling with that and messing with that show so I think when it comes back, it's going to be a little different than what you've seen. But it will be a better incarnation of it," DiVello says. "We have a bunch of new people lined up and a bunch of new locations. We just kind of branched it out. We're just waiting for The Word."

Executive Producer Adam Divello on Finales

Tonight, MTV will air a finale double-feature, as “The Hills” and “The City” wrap up their story lines. In the case of “The Hills,” tonight’s episode marks the end of the series, after more than 100 episodes, incalculable tears and public breakdowns. Executive producer Adam Divello won't give out any details, but said the producers “shot a lot of surprises.”

The Wall Street Journal: How do you feel about “The Hills” ending after six seasons?

Adam Divello: It’s a bittersweet moment for us to see the series end. It was something we all felt that it was the right time.

Will there be any spin offs?
Never say never. There’s definitely been some interest but nothing is in the works right now.

Is there any truth to rumors that Stephanie Pratt will join the cast of “The City?”
We’ve never talked to Stephanie Pratt about coming to “The City,” so I don’t know. We are just wrapping up the second season of that show and we haven’t started on the third season. We haven’t gotten an official pick up yet.

Is that why rumors swirled that “The City” was cancelled?
I don’t know how any of this stuff gets planted. It hasn’t been canceled at all. We go through a stage of pre-production where we figure out what we would present next season, and we’re presenting that to the network. But it’s looking very positive that “The City” will return.

When we started out in season one, we were coming off of Whitney leaving the Hills. We went very relationship heavy the first season and I think it was fun to see Whitney dating and running around the city trying to her act together. The second season we went more work related because I think that’s the fun thing to watch. Like a lot of New Yorkers, they take their careers and their work very seriously. When we come back next season, I think a lot of the players are going to be in different places.

Olivia told us that she’s edited in a certain way because the show needs drama. Do you agree?
It’s not a documentary. We’re not following Olivia around 24 hours a day. It’s her under a microscope. It’s probably a slight exaggeration of who she is but it’s all based on [her]. We don’t write the lines for [the cast] and we don’t tell them what to say. What comes out of their mouths is what comes out of their mouths.

If Olivia left Elle magazine, would we get to follow Joe Zee and Erin Kaplan?
We would regroup and think, what do we do next? Do we follow her outside of Elle? Do we follow Elle without her? We would certainly approach Elle and say, ‘Who is going is going to take Olivia’s place, we want to follow that new person.’ We would certainly follow Olivia as she looks for another gig and lands another job.

Does Heidi return in the finale?
You have to wait and see.

Stephanie Pratt tweeted a photo of Converse shoes covered in photos of “The Hills” cast. Are these going to show up in stores now?
Abby, one of our camera operators, [received them as a gift from a friend] for the 100th episode. She wore them to set. Pictures were taken and circulated. It’s very strange to see our cast’s faces all over a pair of sneakers but they are a one of a kind, custom-made Converse.

The Dirty On 'The Hills' Rolling Stone Cover

Back in May '08, Lauren and Heidi had already had a major falling-out and were no longer speaking. So when Rolling Stone called and wanted to put all the stars of "The Hills" on the cover of the mag, the show's producers knew it would take some work to get them in the same room again to join Whitney and Audrina for the scantily clad photo shoot.

"You know, MTV press called us up and they said that Rolling Stone is interested in doing a cover for 'The Hills.' So, of course, you know, it's the best call you can get," show creator Adam DiVello recalled in an outtake from "The Hills: Revealed." "I mean, for me anyway, every cover to me is iconic. I love the magazine, and the thought of a show that I created getting on the cover of Rolling Stone to me was an end all, be all."

The cover came with one big caveat: "All four girls, bottom line, no ifs, ands or buts," DiVello recalled. "When you've got Rolling Stone calling [and] they want your cast on the cover of the magazine, but two of your castmembers don't want to be together in the same room — namely Lauren and Heidi — it seemed like it was never going to happen. I mean, there was a time when we thought, 'This is not going to happen,' because we were not going to get them together."

But it seemed like the magazine-cover gods were shining on them, and the shoot came together. "You get to the bottom of it and figure out how to make it happen," DiVello said. "And luckily, we pulled it off."

'The Hills' Cast 'On Air With Ryan Seacrest'

To celebrate the "The Hills" 100th episode, Kristin Cavallari, Brody Jenner, Stephanie Pratt and creator Adam Divello joined Ryan's radio show to talk about the past, present and finale of the show.

Adam Divello Talks 'The Hills' Finale, Aftershow

The Hills creator Adam DiVello appeared on On Air With Ryan Seacrest to tout the MTV hit's 100th episode, airing Tuesday -- plus the series finale slated for July 13.

"Everybody's kind of coming at peace with their stories that we've been following along," DiVello said of the finale. "A few of them definitely found happiness and what they were looking for."

And DiVello announced that the live finale aftershow will feature two old Hills friends: Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.

"It will be a big party," DiVello said.

Speidi Might Not "Come Back" for Hills Finale

Heidi Montag and (you know..), have been prominent figures o The Hills since 2006. However, they might not appear on the series' last episode, Us Weekly reports.

Neither has taped since mid-April (Us Weekly previously reported that Spencer, 26, was suspended from the show after threatening to kill a producer; Heidi's role was reduced after she objected to a faux-divorce story line).

A source tells Us Weekly show creator Adam DiVello "said he doesn't think Heidi and Spencer will come back for the series finale."

Heidi, 23, wasn't invited to a secret May 6 powwow Divello had with the female cast in Santa Monica, Calif., to brainstorm the series finale.

"All the girls were asked to come up with ideas of how the show can end," an insider tells Us Weekly. Among the ideas: a trip to Costa Rica for the 100th episode (two before the finale) and a future Sex and the City–style movie sequel.

"He wants The Hills to end on an upbeat tone," a source tells Us Weekly of DiVello's plan. "He wants to show the audience that the girls are going on to bigger and better things and that the show was good for them."

'Hills' Stars at Odds over Montag's Accusations

"Extra's" Lauren Sanchez sat down with "The Hills" stars, Brody Jenner, Audrina Patridge and Kristin Cavallari, who responded to accusations that executive producer Adam DiVello had been inappropriate with Heidi Montag.

Brody calls Adam "one of the nicest guys," who is not at all inappropriate. Audrina told Sanchez that she and the producer managed to butt heads, but that he'd never been inappropriate, nor is he ever there while on set filming.

Kristin, however, had a different opinion of DiVello. "I filmed with Heidi recently and he was on set that day. He's never there on set when we're (Audrina and Brody) there. Who knows, who knows what's true or not."

Cavallari, like Heidi, has also been a hot media target, with rumors flying that she's struggling with a drug problem. She accuses DiVello of not having her back in the press, saying, "He's not my favorite person. I'm gonna be honest. He has good ratings because (we're on) the cover of Us Weekly -- at my expense."

When the magazine asked MTV to comment, they wouldn't respond. "Which might as well be saying she has a drug problem. They didn't have my back whatsoever," said Cavallari.

Audrina Dishes On Kristin's "Party Issues"

audrinakristin-1.jpg

Audrina Patridge told Ryan Seacrest today on his radio show her Hills co-star Kristin Cavallari has "party issues," in reference reports the Laguna Beach hottie was fiending for cocaine at the SuperBowl.

Kristin's hard-partying ways are about to be revealed in the season premiere of The Hills, but Audrina said today on KIIS FM her co-star "has issues."

Earlier this year when an Us Weekly report first published quotes from a "source" accusing Cavallari of asking around for coke at a SuperBowl party in Miami, the reality star Tweeted "Get ur facts straight Us Weekly-ur article is complete BULLSH*T."

Audrina also joked about her other Hills co-star Heidi Montag's post-plastic surgery recovery and said that on the show, viewers will see that Spencer's wife wasn't able to even chew a hamburger. "Her jaw was locked." She goes on to say, "I'm sure she could swallow." :)

Seacrest also brings up Heidi's sexual harassment lawsuit against Hills creator, Adam DiVello. Patridge is quick to support DiVello saying, "Adam would never do that ... ever!"

INTERVIEW Adam Divello On The Hills / The City

Despite the endless debates over the amount of reality that actually exists in MTV reality series like "Laguna Beach" and subsequent spin-offs "The Hills" and "The City," audiences have never seemed to mind All good things must come to an end, however, and Adam DiVello, who created both "The Hills" and "The City" announced recently that tonight's sixth season premiere of "The Hills" would be its last.

In staying true to the often over-the-top genre, DiVello told our Jim Halterman earlier this week that he has big plans on sending Kristin, Audrina, Heidi, Spencer and Brody off with a bang while also managing to keep "The City" (premiering its second season tonight) growing bigger and bigger. DiVello also talked about how the stars of his shows have handled the tricky business of fame, the moment he realized "The Hills" had turned a corner in popularity and how both shows use music differently in telling the soapy stories of the rich and beautiful on both the West Coast ("The Hills" is set in Los Angeles) and East Coast ("The City" follows Whitney Port in the Big Apple's fashion designer world).

The obvious first question is what prompted you to end 'The Hills' after this sixth season.
Adam DiVello: I think we all thought it was time. The kids on the show have all gone to different places in their lives and their celebrity lives were becoming much bigger than their personal lives and I think we owed it to the fans and owed to the people who have been with us since the beginning.

There are a lot of big personalities on the show and some seem to have handled the celebrity well and some maybe not as well. How do things from where you sit?
AD: Everyone handles fame differently and I can't think of another reality show that has been on this long with the same cast and they have been under the spotlight for many, many years. I think for the most part they have all handled it really well from my perspective and though I'm not in their shoes I applaud them at how some of them have handled it. You look at somebody like Lauren Conrad who came out of it and she's moving on with other projects and she has handled it really well.
Can you talk about when you first created the show and how you decided on the tone and how the stories would be told on the show?
AD: I think it was back in the day when the idea was floating around to do a reality show in a high school in Laguna Beach. I think it was 'How can we do this and how do we approach it?' We got a great team together in the way it was shot and edited together and I think it changed reality in a sense by taking out those confessionals where the kids talk to the camera. It made our jobs more difficult as producers and storytellers by not having that crutch but I think it gave you the feeling that you were looking in with this voyeuristic feel; you were watching a documentary about these kids and it felt like a scripted series and I think that's what kind of started it.

For me, when we were wrapping up 'Laguna' it was such an incredible experience and it made me move out here from New York and I kind of changed my life at that same time. I think when we left 'Laguna' and did 'The Hills' I really wanted it to be this fish-out-of-water show with the girl from the beach who comes to the big, glamorous city and how she's going to navigate the waters. I think we nailed it. I think Lauren was a great choice because she wanted to work in fashion and she wasn't coming here to be an actress and I think that there was a relatability here that the audience responded to.

JH: When did you realize that 'The Hills' had gotten so big that it was impacting popular culture with so much attention not just on the show but everyone on it?
AD: [Laughs.] When we got the cover of Rolling Stone was a high point, for sure. I think that it was probably around season three when we started to blow up in the tabloids. I think what had happened was whether it was between cycles or when we weren't shooting and the show wasn't on the air but the stories were living in the magazines every week and the interest in these kids was continuing even when the show wasn't airing. That's when you get to point where 'Oh my God, this thing has taken on a life of its own.'

JH: Since you had lived in New York before heading to Los Angeles, how was it to return to the East Coast to do 'The City?'
AD: I consider myself a New Yorker. I lived there for 12 years before I came out to do 'Laguna' and 'The Hills' and for me I always knew in the back of mind that I wanted to do a show in New York, as well. When I came out to do 'The Hills' I was in love with LA and I think an ingredient in that show was Los Angeles as a city in itself and I think we showed it with that love that we all had for the city and I knew I always wanted to do the same for New York. Whitney was born here in Los Angeles and grew up in a suburb here called Brentwood and she lived in a bubble in a sense so to have her move to New York City and deal with everything that goes on there seems like a no-brainer to me and it seems to be working. I'm extremely proud of that show and I love what it's done and where it's going this season. We definitely hit our stride this season.

JH: The music is really a big part of both shows and clearances for that music is always a challenge but are these shows so big that you have artists coming to you?
AD: Just like every part of the show, locations have opened up to us now that we couldn't get to in the past but the same thing with music and artists who we usually may have had a hard time getting have been very open about being a part of the show and they have approached us. Even when The Pussycat Dolls approached us to do the theme song [for 'The City'] that theme song was written for us so that right there alone showed that we were in a different stratosphere as far as doors being open. With 'The Hills' I wanted that very California sound and that includes everything from the laid back music to the nightclub and dance tracks. Going to 'The City' I wanted to make an effort to really use more independent bands and make it a more indie sound; it's a more underground and may be something that people won't know right off the bat but they'll go 'I want that on my IPod.'

JH: Besides steering the last episodes of 'The Hills' and 'The City,' what else do you want to tackle?
AD: Right now, the focus is 100% on making 'The Hills' the best possible season that we've ever had. I think this whole thing will only work if this is the best season out of all six. We want this to be the most buzz-worthy one. Also, again, we're focused on 'The City' and making it the best show possible and we all have huge hopes for it. I have a lot of stuff that I'm working on down the pipeline. I've been casting a bunch of stuff. I love doing reality television and I would love to once again reinvent it. I definitely want to get into some sort of scripted hybrid version of what we do. Again, just kind of take what is being done in scripted and turn it on its ears much as we did with these shows.

"The Hills" and "The City" return tonight starting at 10:00/9:00c on MTV.

Heidi Montag Won't Sue Over 'Grope'

"The Hills" resident bimbo Heidi Montag has decided not to sue the show's creator, Adam DeVillo, for alleged sexual harassment. The surgically enhanced Montag had accused DeVillo of inappropriately groping her during a cast photo shoot in March, but then she spent a week consulting with her lawyers. A source tells us, "Heidi and her husband (name removed) have changed their minds and realized they should just move on." A rep for Montag didn't respond to requests for comment.

Lauren Conrad Wanted for French Hills Return

We doubt Lauren Conrad has plans to return to The Hills, even for the series finale. But maybe a former boss will convince the 24-year-old otherwise.

"The show gave her a great run," Teen Vogue editor Lisa Love told us last night at Diego Della Valle's MOCA fundraiser at Tod's in Beverly Hills. "She should definitely come back for the finale."

Hills creator Adam DiVello told EW.com that his dream is to have Miss Conrad walk down the aisle in the last episode, but Love has other things on her wish list for L.C.'s hoped for return...

"It'd be fun if Lauren and I caught up in Paris," Love suggested. "I think they could find a way to make it work with her coming back."

Unlike former Hillster Whitney Port, Love hasn't quite been following the antics of Audrina Patridge and Lo Bosworth since Conrad's farewell.

"It was over many years ago for me, and I haven't watched it since," Love said. "I never watched it even when I was on. You don't want to watch yourself on TV. I only follow what's going on with the cast when I'm at the airport."

UPDATE: Adam Divello Issues Statement

Adam Divello has issued the following statement in response (via MTV) to Heidi Montag's sexual assault claims:

"We have looked into this matter and the allegations made against Adam Divello are completely false and without merit. Adam not only created 'The Hills' and 'The City,' launching the careers of several cast members, but has worked diligently to maintain a respectful and appropriate production environment."

Lauren Conrad: Sexual Assault Claims "Absurd"

Lauren Conrad is dismissing an Internet report alleging that Hills creator Adam DiVello sexually harassed Heidi Montag.

"Similar to most of my fellow MTV cast mates, I am in utter shock at the allegations made against Adam DiVello," she tells UsMagazine.com in a statement. "Not only are they completely absurd, but they are 100 percent without merit. Adam is a true professional and a wonderful person to work for."

Citing multiple sources, celeb blogger Perez Hilton wrote Tuesday that DiVello allegedly touched Montag, 23, inappropriately on her buttocks and "lower back" after she underwent her 10 cosmetic procedures.

Sources also told Hilton that DiVello allegedly made inappropriate advances toward Lauren Conrad, which Conrad, 24, denies.

Hilton quoted a source as saying: "Adam can get away with that with the Audrinas and Kristins of reality TV but not with Heidi! He is a pervert and a creep. The other girls don't feel they can't defend themselves because they are afraid they will lose their job if they talk about the man's workplace behavior. Heidi will not tolerate sexual assault in the workplace!"

Montag and her husband Spencer Pratt "are very close to bringing legal action against the show," an insider told Hilton.

An MTV spokesperson tells Us: "We have looked into this matter and the allegations made against Adam DiVello are completely false and without merit. Adam not only created The Hills and The City, launching the careers of several cast members, but has worked diligently to maintain a respectful and appropriate production environment."

In March, Us reported that Pratt was asked to leave The Hills for six weeks after he "flipped out" on-set after a female producer made a request to which he objected. "He got so crazy that he screamed at [her], 'I should kill you for even asking me to do that!'" the source told Us.

"Very rattled" by Pratt's outburst, the producer filed a complaint with the show's top producers -- who then threatened to kick Pratt off the show. Pratt's team went back with a compromise: "The show agreed that Spencer would leave The Hills for six weeks to do anger management training once a week at home," said a source. "If he completes it, he can return to the show."

Asked what happened Montag recently told Us, "I just think they said some really inappropriate things that I'm not really allowed to say. They said something very inappropriate ... very out of line."

Heidi Montag Alleges Assault From Hills Creator!

Multiple sources close to Heidi Montag reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that the reality star is alleging that since her multiple cosmetic procedures she has been touched inappropriately on her "ass cheeks and lower back" by the creator and executive producer of The Hills, Adam Divello.

"Tension on the set of The Hills has truly escalated in the last few weeks and Spencer and Heidi are very close to bringing legal action against the show," an insider tells me.

A Montag source says, "Adam can get away with that with the Audrinas and Kristins but not with Heidi! He is a pervert and a creep. The other girls dont feel they can't defend themselves because they are afraid they will lose their job. Heidi will not tolerate sexual assault in the workplace!"

Credit: Perez Hilton

Lauren "Lo" Bosworth just released the following message via Twitter: "I'll repeat it: no one is/has ever been assaulted during filming of our show. hey spiedi, do you know the definition of slander? NOT OKAY."

Kristin Cavallari said "Well well. Interesting news this morning..."  Not sure whether she was referring to the same news, but there is a good chance.

Whenever I think Speidi can't get any lower in life, they suprise me. Can you say ''copycat offender''? Just because Nicolette Sheridan is making claims and you notice that she's getting publicity for it doesn't mean it will work with you, Heidi. Ms. Sheridan is a respected actress.
